Shauna Geoghegan

Adolescent Psychotherapist

Shauna Geoghegan

Shauna is a fully accredited psychotherapist with the Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP), specialising in working with adolescents and young adults aged 12–25. She holds a Master of Science in Pluralistic Counselling and Psychotherapy, a BA (Honours) in Applied Social Studies and a Professional Certificate in Integrative Psychotherapy for Adolescents.

Shauna brings extensive experience of supporting adolescents and young adults, including more than six years working with young people affected by addiction, mental health difficulties and challenging family circumstances. More recently, her work has focused specifically on providing therapeutic support to young people aged 12–25.

Throughout her career, Shauna has supported young people experiencing a wide range of emotional and psychological difficulties, including anxiety, depression, bereavement, low self-esteem, school avoidance, relationship difficulties, self-harm and suicidal thoughts. She also has experience supporting neuro-divergent young people and working alongside parents and families when appropriate.

Shauna has worked closely with young people referred through services including CAMHS, GPs, Tusla, schools and parents or guardians. Her experience includes individual psychotherapy, assessments with young people and their parents, school-based support and working with young people experiencing complex emotional difficulties. She has undertaken additional specialist training in areas including suicide prevention, self-harm, trauma-informed practice and supporting adolescents.

Shauna works from a pluralistic and integrative approach, which means she does not believe that one type of therapy will suit every young person. Instead, she takes time to understand the individual adolescent - their personality, experiences, needs and what they hope to gain from therapy & works collaboratively with them to find an approach that feels right.

Central to Shauna's work is creating a therapeutic relationship in which a young person can feel safe, respected and genuinely heard. She understands that opening up to someone new can be difficult, particularly during adolescence, and believes in allowing trust to develop at the young person's own pace.

Her aim is to provide a warm, compassionate and non-judgemental space where adolescents and young adults can begin to make sense of what they are experiencing, develop a greater understanding of themselves and feel supported as they navigate the challenges of growing up.
